Holiday Fun at the Halthen's

Here you see family, friends, and sons with girlfriends. If you look closely you'll notice that there's a sign that says 'Happy Birthday'. No, we are not confused. We are just celebrating many events at one time: birthday, Thanksgiving, and holiday college football games.
After the meal, we went for a walk and then the "kids" and Dad bought a Christmas tree. Enjoy this short video starring the Halthen men being filmed by  big sister (she is the dance director)!

They were each demonstrating their choice with a little dramatic flair! Skip is in the front, then comes Erik, and Dad is in the back.

 Here is our family's favorite way to cook our turkey!!!
It's called Trashcan Turkey! Note that it is the men who cook this turkey.
The turkey is inside that metal trashcan, cooking.



 That handsome young man who is standing next to my daughter is my son-in-law.




Watching the turkey is the main activity.

On Saturday, October 30, 2010 the Opera company of Philadelphia Chorus and over 650 area choristers met at Macy's Center City Philadelphia.

The people with the round pins are the professional singers. They are scattered throughout the the center of the mall and begin to sing. The shoppers had no idea what was happening, but quickly stop their shopping to enjoy this 'random act of culture'.

Don't go in the Red on Black Friday!

Black Friday is the Friday following Thanksgiving Day in the United States, traditionally the beginning of the Christmas shopping season.

What about the Pilgrim's Thanksgiving?

The Pilgrims set aground at Plymouth Rock on December 11, 1620. Their first winter was devastating. Weakened by the seven-week crossing and the need to establish housing, they came down with pneumonia and consumption. They began to die By the spring, they had lost 46 of the original 102 who sailed on the Mayflower.

The Pilgrims obviously needed help and it came from an English-speaking member of the Wampanoag nation, Squanto. Squanto decided to stay with the Pilgrims for the next few months and teach them how to survive.

The harvest of 1621 was a bountiful one and the remaining colonists decided to celebrate with a feast.

But the only letter that we have telling us about the first Thanksgiving praises God for the harvest, makes reference to the "goodness of God" in providing for them, and says that the feast was held so that they "might after a special manner rejoice together."⁴ 

The settlers asked Squanto and the leader of the Wampanoags, Massasoit, to bring their immediate family and to dine with them. The feast lasted three days. The Pilgrims and Indians ate outdoors at large tables and competed together in tests of skill and strength.

A Brief History of Veterans Day

Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, was originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor the end of World War I, which officially took place on November 11, 1918.
In 1954, after having been through both World War II and the Korean War, the 83rd U.S. Congress -- at the urging of the veterans service organizations -- amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting the word "Veterans." With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, Nov. 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.
